    BF20 Owners! Column Flex

Looking to find out if my column flex is common. I am measuring:
(from point table and column bolt together)

Column Flex 11"(279.4mm) up column is 0.005" (0.152mm).
Column Flex 17"(431.8mm) up column is 0.00925" (0.235mm)

If you could take 10min and take a reading for me I would appreciate it.

If I grab the column and bear hug the thing I can get about 0.0025" at approx 12" up from the joint. My kinda tippy stand limits the force I can put on it but it seems to do better than my X2 did but I still expected it to flex on that long, kinda thin, rear bolted column.

    Not a problem.

Super X3. 3600rpm. Sheridan 6"x24" Lathe + more. Three ways to fix things: The right way, the other way, and maybe your way, which is possibly a faster wrong way.

Thats a good idea (so simple yet I missed it....) I just might have to come up with a similar solution... thanks.

Still wondering what the normal flex is.
Thanks photomankc for taking the time to measure.

I have both the BF20 and the BF30. I used a floating construction to mount the columns to a solid wall. Here's a video showing the flex on my BF30 and the difference after mounting to the wall. This construction doesn't influence the tram of you column because it 'floats'.

I've had the BF20 for five years now and I did this mod about 3 years ago and I'm very happy with it. Makes a world of difference. I did the same for the BF30.

At the end of the video I did some milling of steel with and without the supports measuring the 'vibration' of the column at the top with an indicator. It shows the difference very well. However, I did not measure it the way you did in your video. But it should give you an idea. You do have to get through the first minute of video before I get into the column mod. Cheers.

    Re: BF20 Owners! Column Flex

    Hi from the future.

I just measured the same amount of flex on the column of my BF20L. Unfortunately the machine is in an enclosure and no wall near it so I guess there is nothing I can do.

    Best,
    Suat
