    2.2kw 24000rpm Huanyang Spindle won't exceed 12000rpm

    I have a Huanyang 2.2 kW water-cooled spindle and I'm controlling it with Mach 4. The spindle will only go up to 12000 RPMs instead of the 24000 RPMs that it is supposed to be running at. I have tried a total factory reset of the VFD but it still does not work. The spindle runs fine and at the correct speed anywhere from 7200 RPMs to 12000 RPMs. The rpm of the spindle is checked with a laser tachometer. Any ideas? Here are my settings:

    PD001 1
    PD002 1
    PD003 400
    PD004 400
    PD005 400
    PD006 3.0
    PD007 1.2
    PD008 220
    PD009 15
    PD010 8
    PD011 120
    PD014 2
    PD015 2
    PD070 0
    PD072 400
    PD073 0
    PD141 220
    PD142 8.5
    PD143 2
    PD144 3000

    How are you controlling it?

    I think you need to narrow down whats causing it. Put the VFD in manual mode and see if you get the 12K or 24K manually. If it's still not right in manual, then you know its in the VFD.

    I checked the VFD in manual mode and I get a full range of 7200-24000 RPMs.

    What is your voltage out to the VFD drive 0-10v if it is 5v then change this Parameter
    PD070=1

    PD006=15
    PD007=20
    PD010=10

    PD041=8 ( Carrier Frequency up to 10 Max for these Spindle motors)

    PD174= ??? ( To Be Set to the VFD Drives Max Rated Output Amps )

    Make sure PD143=2 that it is set to ( 2 )

    Yes, my controller voltage is 0-10v and I checked that with a multimeter. I just tried all those settings and the motor decreased speed down to 8000 RPMs and it went back up to 12000 RPMs when I changed PD006 back to 3.0. PD143 is definitely set to 2 and PD174 is set to 11 amps (from the label on the VFD).

    How do you have the J1 jumper set?

    I am assuming this is to control the VFD with either an external controller or with the onboard potentiometer? If so then yes, it is set correctly

    That is very strange PD006=3 would not normally be suitable for your spindle this is for a 50Hz motor setting yours is 400Hz

    What number do you have in PD071=

    You may have a faulty or incorrectly programed VFD

    1-2, or 2-3?

    Have a try to set PD002=0, which means the operation frequency is set by the keypad.
    Then tune up the frequency by pressing the up arrow key. See if the freq. could be 400Hz or not.

    When your checking the 0-10 vdc add some clips onto you meter leads and see if your getting a true 0-10 volts DC under load. Some power supplies will not source a true 10 volts under load.
    How many volts is the source to the controller? Has to be greater than 10 volts and on page 13 of the manual it says to use 0-10 vdc out set the PWM at 20000 and use Pin 17.

    Good call yes if he changes the drive parameters back to keypad control, and then power up see if he can get max spindle RPM would be a good test to see if he has the VFD Parameters set correct

    If you read back you will see he has already ran the spindle in the manual mode up to 400 Hz and 24,000 rpm. Its either got to be in the VFD setup or his control board configuration.

    Missed that but he should still check it again as he changed some Parameters

    So if it does work from the KeyPad to max RPM, then it is the supply to the VFD that is not working correct or some Parameters not set correct in the VFD Drive related to the 0-10v control

    I will double check my PWM settings for Pin 17 when I get back to the machine. I have the jumper set to 2-3 and I’m not sure why but I’m not getting a voltage reading when it’s under load, but it obviously works under 12000 rpms which confuses me. The source voltage to the controller is 24v

    The J1 Jumper should be on 1-2 not 2-3

    Ok I just doubled checked and the jumper is actually on pin 1-2 and I have doubled checked that my PWM settings are correct in Mach 4 for Pin 17. I'm stumped

    So, when you are measuring the output voltage from the Pokeys, is the spindle on and running?
    If the Pokeys it not putting out enough voltage, there is a potentiometer on the board to adjust it up or down.
    Also, you have the ground connected from the Pokeys isolated output to the VFD. Correct?
    On the Pokeys the Gndi should connect to ACM on the VFD with the 0-10V signal connected to VI.
