Re: 'Best' controller/software for 2 axis lathe conversion
Dynomotion https://dynomotion.com/ and Camsoft PC Based CNC Controller For The Machine Tool CNC Retrofit And CNC Controller OEM market products might also be worth a look.
Your GHB-1340 would make a nice platform to retrofit. I was going to convert mine but bought a CNC lathe instead. You might concider a design that would allow you to easily switch between manual and CNC operation, that way you have the best of both worlds. I did get as far as designing the whole system concept.
I did retrofit my CNC lathe, the DMM servos are a good choice, what I used on mine.
The only canned cycles that I use are rigid tapping (G84) and single point threading (G32). The only reason for these canned cycles is to electronically gear the Z axis to the spindle, this needs to be done at the controller level. Everything else is generated in Fusion 360 using G1 moves.
Your ''Required'' items should be supported by any system. The rest of your ''Wanted'' items is really a matter of your programming creativity. I don't think you are going to find an out-of-the-box solution, but I could be wrong here.
I'll be interested in your progress on this.
