    PParrett's 6040 1.5kW Aluminum Customized Build

Hello to all! Just took ownership of this 6040 1.5kW machine second hand. Brand new to the forums but looking forward to making a few small improvements and sharing some pictures here along the way. From my searches so far, this looks like a great community!

Condition on pickup was okay, the seller hadn't used it in years so a lot of old grease and dust but no obvious structural issues. Size comparison here next to my old 3040.

First order of business was a full teardown and rebuild of the frame. Took my time cleaning out old grease and dust and then slowly reassembled with all new oil and grease. Used the granite slab to true things up wherever possible.

Finished the rebuild of the structure. All motors are operating smoothly now. Also found that the old spindle had a bit of corrosion at the water cooling ports. Ran a mixture of LCR and water for an hour and cleaned it out.

Worked over the weekend a bit on a base for the enclosure. The bottom section houses a silencer and cyclone (dust deputy) for my shop vac. The new top section will act as a home for the new Control box, VFD, water cooling, and a drawer for misc tooling.

Re-milled the mounting plate for the 1.5kw motor to straighten and cleanup the rough milling job done by the previous owner. Also media blasted the mounts and plate to clean everything up. Before and After here...

Started work on the enclosure last night. Using and old VCR top/bottom combined with some scrap aluminum plate and this black 3U aluminum faceplate from amazon.

Finished and painted the control box. Here's where it will live under the machine. Got a matching 3U black aluminum drawer for the right hand side to keep misc tooling close at hand. Can you guess what the center section here will have?

    Great build...Very nice work.
One thought....You have very restricted air flow around your control box, locating it in that spot.
You may have heat problems, especially in the warmer months.

Very good point. The back of the wood cabinet is open and there is clearance at the top of the case. I was planning a fan at the rear of the box in push configuration to blow cold air into the box and then exhaust top and sides.

How warm do your drivers get? I'll be running DM556T drivers at about 3A, well under their 5.6 max. My hope was this would put them well into their ambient temp operating range.

Worst case I mount them to a cooling plate and put them on the closed loop. ....water cooled stepper drivers sounds fancy.

Drilled and tapped some locations for the limit switches. Here's the locations I'm using if anyone is curious. Adding a 1/4 bar to one of the linear bearings gave me a reference for the z-axis. One piece and one screw was the most simple approach I could think of.

Sounds like your on to it.....good stuff.
I have a similar setup. One sucking fan and one blowing fan, opposite each other.

More work on the control box. My plan is to create two separate EMI zones separated by an aluminum plate. Also, using aluminum rivnuts as risers to allow some airflow under the components. Drives mounted to an aluminum plate for additional heatsinking.

Shes Alive!!! After a little bit of messing with UCCNC last night we achieved the first motion from the new control box. X,Y,Z all running now. Next up will be VFD and Water Cooling.

Used some scrap acrylic to glue up a water cooling reservoir. Pump, radiator, and temperature display were all cheap computer water cooling components from eBay. I'll go back and make a nice mount for the temperature display out of black acrylic later.
