left shift and -, is the only one I know about

Whn you say "work," what do you mean?
If you want to type an underscore, hold down the shift key, and the minus key (which is to the right of the regular zero number.)
This is assuming you're using standard US QWERTY keyboard layout -- are you perhaps using something else?

i mean when i hold down the shift key and minus key i still get the minus
im using the keyboard that came with the tormach 1100

That's weird. If you hold down the shift key and press a number, do you get the number or the symbol?
It may be that your shift key is busted.
Also, check that Caps Lock isn't on. That "shouldn't matter" In theory, but the difference between theory and practice ...
