Hey Guys,

I have a Citizen A20 that keeps killing the four D-cell batteries that maintain position. They are plugged directly into the amplifiers, and there is no sign of corrosion, dirt, loose wires...nothing. What could be draining them in less than a week?

Are you using the correct Batteries, not all are created equal.

They are just standard D batteries. We have used plenty of generics in the past with no problems, the last two sets were actually Duracell Industrial.

Connect an amp meter to see how much juice it is drawing. Those batteries power absolute encoders, so the current draw should be extremely low, so if it is pulling more than 30ma you probably have a bad encoder

They 1.5v each, yes?.
Parallel wired?. If so...
I would wire in a small 6v psu temporarily and have it permanently on while I find/fix the main problem.
(will save money on batteries).

My thought is, that whatever they give backup power to is not getting power to it while MC is running. Thus permanently sucking the batteries dry 24/7.

Check the contacts are in good shape, in the Servo Drive the Caps for this circuit may need replacement
