Help with G0704 power feed unit (T23010)

    Hi All

Hopefully someone might be able to throw some light on my problem or offer suitable alternatives, because I'm losing patience with this power feed unit.

Back in 2016 I managed to kill the motor for the power feed unit by crashing the mill a couple of times. My ineptitude resulted in lengthy investigations and admittance to a specialist electronics shop (I'm not gifted with a deep understanding of electrickery, never mind electronics!), the end result was replacement of the motor with one I sourced directly from China. I actually bought two, so I'd have a spare.

Fast forward to yesterday and I crashed the mill again, complete brain fade moment, which resulted in the 15a fast blow fuse doing what they do best...and the motor failing to proceed any further despite replacing the fuse. I took the motor out, stripped it down and cleaned up the armature, which didn't look too bad. Reassembly resulted in a functioning motor until I increased the speed (no load) to around halfway, whereupon sparks issued forth and everything died again.

After stripping it all down again I installed the spare motor, only to find it was still not working!!! :boxing: I did some rudimentary electrical testing and confirmed power is getting to the switch and beyond, and the speed pot is functioning properly...so what on earth have I done to this extremely frustrating piece of equipment? Perhaps I've blown the circuit board or fwd/rev switch? Perhaps the replacement motor was already dead? I can source another motor for around £45 but they're so fragile it's getting beyond a joke.

As a result, I'm considering alternatives, I really like how this unit fits and looks on the machine...but I wonder if there's a suitable alternative available? I'm considering this primarily because I fear a replacement will only last a few years (of usually very light usage) before requiring another replacement and I'm sure the long term supply will dry out eventually.

The motor is a ZD Z3DW30-90GN although the code appears to be Z3W30-90GN elsewhere (without the "D"). This translates into a 30w 90v motor, can't remember the revs but I think it's around 3,000 rpm.

    Any ideas...?

Look at Servo brand products https://www.icai-online.com/servo-ty...SAAEgIi_PD_BwE

At the rate you are going through motors, it would pay for itself in short order.

Good grief...the spindle motor has just died too! It's clearly not my week

Are the original motor still available - mine is 240v?

It seems to me that you are still operating the machine manually, in that case a stock motor is probably okay and you are likely to find people here who would sell you theirs. I know I sold mine for like cents on the dollar just to get it out of my shop.

I am indeed, originally planned to CNC it but I don't use it enough to justify the outlay.

I've contacted the original vendor in the UK to see if spares are available but otherwise I might be able to upgrade to one of the brushless motors attached to newer machines, assuming they fit my old version.
