Where to BUY End Mills for a Spindle

Finally got my Avid PRO 48x48 up and running. I have the 2.2kw spindle with ER20 Collets.

I come from a metal machining background. Where is everyone getting Carbide End Mills?

Some of these CNC ROUTER specific bits are way overpriced compared to traditional end mills.

    Any insight?

End mills and router bits have different geometries, for cutting different materials.
I usually use Onsrud, Vortex, or Amana. No, they are not cheap.

I get carbide and HSS from Toolstoday.com. I have had alot of great outcomes with the single flute HSS tools, inexpensive and sharp as hell. All the HSS tools are more forgiving of mistakes as they are more flexible then the carbide tools.

If you go on UTUBE and browse the vids by Stefan Gottenswinter he advocates 3 flute carbide end mills and runs them dry because he like to not have the muck to clean up afterwards.

For example, he did a test run in steel on a manual mill and ran an 8mm 4 flute carbide roughing end mill at 6mm depth of cut, full width, with a feed rate of 90 mm per min without coolant.......1,300 rpm.

A second test was with a 3 flute carbide end mill, 45deg helix, 1,000 rpm, 7mm depth of cut and a 40mm/min feed rate in 304 stainless.

handlewanker, 3 flute carbide is great at 1300rpm, Spindles can't turn below 8,000RPM normally.

Hi....I did say the UTUBE example was on a manual mill, something like a BF20 or other..........if you are using a watercooled high speed spindle......8,000 to 24,000 rpm...... then you'll have to use some other method, like a conventional driven spindle with a VFD etc.

    Hi,
I use a lot of very small endmills mostly from Kyocera Tycom and I get them at good prices

I get all my cutting tools, collets, etc. at MSC Industrial (MSC Industrial Supply - Metalworking tools and MRO Supplies). I typically use 2-flute HSS miles for all the work I do. Accupro is my preferred brand.

Try Amazon, MSC is so high priced I usually spend $20-30 USD sometimes more and they are decent bits. Never more than 2 flute with these High speed spindles.
