    Question Drag Chain Router Cable

I have a 2.25HP router on my DIY CNC router build.

I plan to use 18AWG continuous flex cable for the steppers and limits. I know the router requires 14AWG.

But what type of cable would you run for the router through a drag chain?

Is it just a normal router using 2 core + earth?
If so I'd use something like this:

The 3 core hasn't many options. More optons available as a 4 core.

I would run 14 or 12 AWG cable. For a standard standard router, not VFD rated, just use 14/3 cable. You want something that is water, oil and fire resistant and flexible.

Is there LOWES in UK? If not, any hardware store. Anything SJOOW rated or better.

If you are running through a drag chain I highly recommend wire / cables rated for such use. Extension cord wire will not last long. As for the gage I’d suggest 12 ga if you are running low voltage. On 220 vac you may be able to get by with less. In any event you should follow local regulations.

The reality is you should determine operating current to properly size the wire. You didn’t supply that info and I’m not even sure what type of router we are talking about here. But current impacts heat in a conductor and that is what you need to keeping within safe limits.

Although the current rating looks wrong. What they have listed is the free air rating for a single 14 AWG conductor no?.

My router is a 2.25HP 120VAC, rated at 11 amps.

TPE jacketed cable "extension cord" as you call it is going to hold up better than a PVC jacketed cable. Just because you buy it at a hardware store doesn't mean that it is a lesser cable. It usually only means that it is going to cost lass than what you would pay McMaster Carr for the same thing.

In this case, the $22 cable will out perform the $41 cable.

Another interesting comparison of cable jacket materials.

Have you used this in a drag chain?

Mine is a hobby machine so I’m looking to balance life expectancy vs cost. I’d prefer to run 12ga to minimize line loss. I can then use the remainder as the power cord for the control cabinet.

Yes, I have used this cable in drag chains. Most of my machines use this type of cable. My steppers on the last build came with TPE cables.
