    How to figure the amperage this 24vdc servo brake requires?

    I'm doing a retrofit on a router with a servo dynamics mts30m4-38 26lb/in 8.6A 3700 rpm 140v servo with a 24vdc 44lb/in d97-52721 brake on the z axis. I need to get a DC power supply for this brake and am wondering what would be sufficient amperage to release it- can I just put an ammeter in series with the brake and a 24v power supply to get a direct reading and then size the supply based on that or is there a better way?

    An ammeter as you suggest is the best way. Most of those brakes draw less than an amp.

    Hello.

    If the motor specs don´t give you that figure your way of finding it is correct.

    Since you are talking about a DC brake calculating 24 by your ohms reading should give you a good approximation.

    If you decide to check the actual current just remember to start with the higher selections of the ammeter or you might damage it. And also remember not to change selection while powered.

    Another way would be to use a noncontact hall effect based ammeter but if you don´t already own one it isn´t worth buying for this measurement.

    Depending on the duty cycle of the brake and the time it will be connected remember to make your power supply be able to provide at least 1/4 more power to avoid overheaing. 1/2 more is very common.

    Most DMM's will have a high DC Current range of around 10A so that will work as well.
