What is the best way to connect a relay to power a air solenoid with a external 12v power supply.

What machine do you have? If you have a CNC machine with Mach 3 and Gecko drive, Gecko has outputs for control of external devices. Some of the newer machines like Mill Turn have pre-wired plugs for those functions.

Remember to connect a BEMF diode across the relay coil, there are fast versions of the previously popular 1n4002/7 now, it is the UF4002/7.
I use the 4007 version as this covers all voltage ranges.
