    Ferrous vs Non Ferrous Metals

Im just getting into metallurgy myself and one of the basic things I learned about Metallurgy is that metals are separated into two categories, ferrous and non ferrous. Ferrous metals are metals that contain iron, non ferrous metals are metals that don't contain iron.

There are of course all sorts of different categories within ferrous metals and within non ferrous metals but the basics of metallurgy is ferrous and non ferrous metals.

I believe ferrous metals are more often used for tools and for the construction of stuff that requires lots of strength, although one of the downsides of ferrous metals is that they're prone to corrosion which is usually less of a problem with non ferrous metals.

Also ferrous metals are used in electromagnetic circuits, and for this reason, for proximity sensors.
