    HF spindle with encoder

    Hi there,

Can someone enlighten me what would be the advantages having an encoder on a high-speed asynchronous spindle?

The encoder is a $500 option on this particular spindle (36000rpm, 5.5kW, max 4Nm torque).

Monitoring speed, possibly to maintain a constant speed while cutting.

Can't a sensorless vector drive already do that? Probably to lesser accuracy, but does it matter with such high speeds?

    Yes.

    No.

    .
Depends on the type of operations required, one that is typical is to gear an axis off the spindle encoder for threading, but this example is typically used with a slower speed spindle.
Unless you have an application for something of this nature using a H.S. spindle, then it may not be worth it.

Could it be used to do light rigid tapping (M3, M4 threads) ?

That also. Z axis (electronically) geared off it.
