Importing DXF file with multiple layers.

I've just started trying to learn SW. I've been importing dxf files and converting them to solid. If the dxf is just a single layer, all is great.
If the dxf consists of multiple layers, I find that I'm only able to manipulate one of the layers.
By default it will be the last layer in but I can change that by opting to edit one of the other layer.
As soon as I select views on one of the layers as the front view, that's it. The other layers can no longer be selected and placed in their proper view.
    What am I missing?

Turn on the "layers" tool bar and see if they are but just blanked out.
