I'm using a Automation Direct GS3 drive on mine, but any properly rated sensorless vector VFD will run the motor. But you will lose indexing capability if you use a VFD. And I would guess that a VFD would not be compatible with the Fanuc controls. I ripped everything that said Fanuc out of my machine, with the exception of the spindle motor.

did the same with my machine and also would like to keep the spindle motor but need indexing for tool changer
If not already equipped, you could install ''shot pin'' indexing on the spindle for tool changing.
This would be a pin that enters a slot, pushed in by a small air cylinder. Rotate at very low speed, and kill the run signal to the VFD when the pin drops into the slot.
