    Harmonic drive knocking noise

    https://youtu.be/XhlZheT1fu0

Hello, i recently got a 4th Axis harmonic drive for my diy mill. It works totaly fine but makes some strange knocking noise when spinning in one direction (clock wise @12sec in the video).
Is this something to worry about?

It sounds more electronic than mechanical. Like the stepper motor is skipping a beat or something. I would remove the stepper from the unit and see if the same thing occurs. Then rotate the harmonic drive by hand and maybe you can feel something. Maybe put a shaft in an electric drill to rotate the harmonic drive to check for a mechanical problem.

If you've had the drive apart, check to be sure the flex spline isn't off-center. If the spline is installed correctly where it only contacts the circular spline 180* apart. If the flex spline is even 1 spline off, you will get contact between non-engaged spline tips on one half of the circumference, so you'll get knocking/tapping in one direction as the splines snap over each other.

Today i tried to spin my drive by hand couldn't hear any knocking tough. Also wen spun by the stepper the knocking seems to just went away. All it makes now is a gentle grinding noise, its a bit uneven tough. Does not sound too bad, but as i have no previous experience with harmonic drives dunno if thats normal?

    Check through this.

I suspect your problem is covered on page 35 out of 57.

There are two page 35s in that PDF. One is an index; the other is the back page.
    Help?

    Roger,

You've either got a reader that's whacked or you downloaded a corrupted copy of the pdf. Page 35 in the document I downloaded from the link above covers torque limits.

Ah, I see. I went to p 35 according to the page numbers in the corners, as marked by HD.

You were referring to Torque Limits on the 35th page of the doc. The page number for that is 13 (see number in corner).

    Cheers
