machine looses position in X axes

hi i am new to this forum
was hoping to get some help with my older MS CNC JR vertical milling machine
the machine loses tracking ever so often in the x axes
totally random so is the amount of of position loss
the amount is anywhere from .002 to .0049"
it usually happens on the beginning of the milling cycle or end never in the process

any help would be greatly appreciated

It sounds like lost steps, which happens when steppers try to go too hard or too fast. You might try turning down the acceleration on the axis that's failing. It could be due to a lubrication failure, or it could be a coupler that's slipping.
