    Updating a Labvolt 5500 Lathe

I just got a labvolt 5500 lathe and the controller is out in it. I am going to replace it and strip out all of the old stuff and replace it. I have tracked all of the steppers, motor and limit switches. I think the steppers are a nema 23 but unsure of the way it will wire into the DM 556 controller. Also what would be a good VSD for the spindle. Any help on this would be great.

How many wires do your steppers have?

My stepper has 4. It looks like a nema 17 size. My spindle motor is a DC one with only 3 wires( Ground, Pos, Neutral

If the stepper is new or has info on it, you should be able to find the info needed. If you can't find documentation on what you have you can ohm the wires to find which go to which winding.

The DM556 driver seems a bit big for a Nema 17, might make sure you set the current dip switches to within the rated current of the stepper before trying it out.
