Haas SL-40 lathe gearbox trouble. Need to pull and repair

Have a 2006 SL-40 lathe with a BAD noise in the spindle gearbox. Anybody pulled one of these or have any experience with them? I was quoted $15,000 for r&r with rebuilt unit so we're gonna give it a shot ourselves.

    Lemme know please.

    Thanks for all the response.
For what it's worth, apparently the internals for Haas gearboxes are made by fairies in the Black Forest. Nobody has parts or info as to where to get anything but they want your old unit back exchange for the newer version which includes the spindle motor. $12,500.+- installed. What a deal.

Did you take it apart ? If they are anything like mill gearbox they are fairly simple with straight cut gears and pretty common bearings
