Z axis drops on power off

Is there a brake on the Z axis head on the mid 2000 Fadals??? I came in from a break and the head was all the way down on the table. Luckily there were no parts and i have no cutter to be destroyed. I have never seen this before and assume the Z servo has a brake. If there is a brake and it's bad... it will have to wait while I finish up some big projects and the temporary brake will be a length of 4 x 4 wood.

My extended z axis 2006 does have a brake but most don’t.

Check inside your column if it does not have a counterweight it will have a brake. There is a little brake controller board in The electric cabinet.

Check you z axis give and especially the straps. They tend to wear a lot and never get checked.

I like to bring the head casting down on some wood and put a few thousands of preload to help take the weight and then just start tightening the strap (ccw on the 1/4 bolt) and if it hasn’t been checked in a while you’ll get a few turns out of it. I just did one the other day and got about 10 turns before the strap started touching.
