V carving text on circumference of a cylinder

I am trying to v carve (engrave) text on the circumference of a cylinder using a 90 degree V-bit (or 45 degree taper tool in madCAM). The toolpath generated does not appear to move in the Z axis, only X and A.
It does appear to work on a 2D test, as demonstrated in the tutorial video, but not around a cylinder. Has anyone figured out how to do this?

    Thanks in advance!

Which tools are you using , it seems that you have Z movement above the surface for rapids but not below the surface for cut movements ?

Yes, you are correct...I do have Z movements above the material but not cut movements. I am using a 45 degree tapered tool (V bit)

Do you have a negative value for your Z depth cut below the surface?

Sorry I meant to ask which tool path your using in madcam , are you using cut between 2 curves or one of the other 3D cut along curves ?

If your using cut along curves you can enter a negative value for. Curves on the surface or put your line at the bottom of the cut and enter a positive value .

    Hope that helps

I'm using From Boundary Curves...I'm following the info in this tutorial video and applying the same strategy to a cylinder. The flat test appears to be doing what it should but the rotary doesn't.

So it looks like from the way the cutter rapids in Z 90 to the surface your using 4 axis between curves , when I use the same set up I get below surface cutting .
But I do not see how one would control the depth other than the cutter will try to plunge to have to 2 sides of the taper always touch the outside lines thus Z height should change upwards where the lines are closer and downwards with wider lines

The only odd thing I get is it almost crashes rhino to use the simulator

I will try to find time later to play with it more

Is your origin and or cplane at Z zero? Try raising it to the depth you want your cutter to go

Sorry, 4th axis part. That doesn't apply. Madcam website there is an update for v carving

One thing I noticed if the cutter is too wide it will not drop the Z height much , try and create a tool in madcam tool library that has a narrower cutter angle and see if that helps
