I am in the planning stages of my "real" CNC build. I built a 3018 Plus and got familiar with Fusion. The 3018 was always going to be a learning tool and I had always planned to do a bigger machine. I was going to use a Precision Matthews and buy a CNC conversion kit and control it with GRBL or Acorn. But I came across a Leadwell MCV-610 for $5K and I can't get it out of my head.

Plusses: It's already CNC. It's beefier than the Precision Matthews. Cabinet, flood cooling, etc are already in place. Total price wouldn't be much different.

Minuses: It's heavy. It was designed to interact with old electronics. It might be 3-phase.

Would it even be possible to drive the spindle motor with a DIY controller? Can the axis motors be controlled with Acorn or GRBL? Can they even be replaced with modern steppers?

Is this a no-starter?
