Wiring a Laser to my CNC using an External 12V Power Supply

Hi all... I've bought a laser to attach to my already operational CNC mill... As usual with Chinese parts the documentation is useless and doesn't cover any wiring info - leading me to search it out instead. Except I can't find exactly what I'm looking for - can someone confirm whether I have understood things right?

I have a DB25-1205 breakout board. It has a 5v power supply only - not a 12v supply like my laser needs, neither does it have a relay. You can see it here:

My Laser is a Sculpfun S9. It has a 3 pin connection on the controller board already that's mounted to it. The pins are '(12V+' 'GND' 'PWM')

Is my solution to simply connect both wires from a 12v power supply to the Vcc and GND pins above - then connect a single wire to the PWM pin and run that to one of the pins (pin 17 I understand) on my breakout board?

If that is correct then I guess I can power on the laser by turning on the power supply - but it will be effectively off until the software sends a PWM signal to fire it up?... i.e by me running code or playing with the controls manually in Mach3

I hope this makes sense... All advice appreciated ????

OK so I have done a bit more research and think I was close but also need to run a wire from -12v GND on the laser back to GND on my BOB..... here is a basic sketch as I think it needs to be... is this right??

Basically I'm concerned about connecting -12v to the GND on my BOB because everything else on it is -5V but I heard that a common GND is fine regardless and it's ok to mix-12v and -5v.

    Did it work?

Your drawing looks correct that should work
