Where to Find Tool Holders and Micro Drills

Hello. This is my first time posting so I hope I'm in the right place. I got a small shop. I got a HAAS TM1-P and want to do some small hole drilling. I know the spindle only goes to 6,000rpm but thought I'd try it. I need to drill holes in 304SS with dia around 0.040" and 5xdia deep. Wondering where to get decent (but not high end) holders for drill bits that small. If ER collets are any good, and any recommendations for drill bits. I've used some Guhrigs in the past manually but they were not carbide. Read somewhere carbide may not be the best for this small since very little flex. Any feedback is appreciated and recommendations and setup advice.

    Thanks

A quality ER holder would be my choice for that. That's what we use in our TM-2P for most hole drilling and tapping.

0.040 dia by 5x deep might be a bit of a challenge, especially in 304. We use both carbide and cobalt, but normally cobalt in the smaller sizes. I would use a micro-drill style, much stiffer than a jobber style. I think you will need to peck to clear chips, but this a bit of a problem in 304 because it likes to work harden. You might talk to your local tool vendor about drill bit options. We normally buy from Western Tool & Supply https://www.westtool.com/ and they are pretty helpful when to comes to stuff like this.

You can't do much better than Guhring for quality.

Shouldn't be a problem. The only thing with 304 is it work hardens so it seems counter intuitive to slow the RPM and increase the feeds a bit. I would use the regular calculations for cobalt and go with that. I drill 1" deep in 17-4 with a 1/16 cobalt bits all the time so .04 in 304 should be fine.

You want to get screw machine or stub drills, coated will last longer

    These drills are good

Another good drill is HSCO from north bay cutting tools you would have to call to see if he has that size in stock. https://www.northbaycuttingtools.com/

Thanks all for the feedback. Yeah working with 304SS is a bear. I've experienced its work hardening. Amazing how hard it gets. I'll look into the West Tool.

Where's a good place to get small ER collets for these drill bits? Also, anyone know a good tool supplier in SE Michigan?!

Shars has some reasonable pricing on ER tool holders, you'll most likely want a ER-16 for those tiny drill bits. I think the Haas uses CAT 40 holders.
