    HES lathe retrofit help please

I just bought a large NCS24 HES lathe. It looks to me as it was a hydralicly powered manual lathe. I want to remove the hydralics and use servos and convert to CNC. What would you recomend for servos and drives?
Also what type of spindle motor and drive do I need?
I have experience with retrofitting CNC mills but never a lathe. I know the spindle speed is more critical in a lathe. I plan on running the lathe with
    mach 3.
    Thanks

    A year later...

Did you ever get the HES retrofitted?

I put a Centroid T400 on a 24NCS-D last April. That example already had DC servo motors, with a ca. 1979 McDonnell Douglas controller. We replaced those with 3kW AC motors and drives from Centroid. 3kW was probably overkill; the machine would have had plenty of torque with 2kW units.

    See http://www.cncsnw.com/HES24NCS.htm for pictures.

Does yours have hydraulic slides, or hydraulic motors turning ballscrews?

    Hello,
Have not had a whole lot of time to work on the machine.
I have purchased 3 KW sure servos and I have the X mounted.
The machine looks good, mine is almost exact, except it doesnt have the turret. Do you know anywhere I could find a turret to add to mine? Also do you sell the centroid retrofit kits?

No specific leads on a turret, but you should be able to use a Dorian, Sautter, or just about any other aftermarket electric-motor unit. I don't know about aftermarket hydraulic units; they are probably available, if you prefer plumbing to wiring....

Centroid sells an 8-position electric turret for $3,495, but I am not convinced it is heavy enough for a machine of this size.

I do sell Centroid retrofit kits to customers in the Northwest and Intermountain West, and elsewhere as long as I am not stepping on the toes of other responsible dealers.
