Help to newbie choose right software

I'm fond of metalworking, there are several machines. I also examined a short course in engineering graphics. I'd like to learn how to make drawings on a PC and 3D models based on them. I wanna to visualize my thoughts and check the correctness of the detail idea before cutting it on metal.
Hence the question: Which programs will suit me?
I'm sorry if I'm in the wrong section)

Look for a student version of SolidWorks, it does a great job. Or if you want you can use Fusion360 which is very popular.

Hi - I have just looked at several CAD CAM systems (I use rhino3d alibre, mecsoft, simsolid and strand7) and it seems Fusion 360 trumps them all when you consider the purchasing and maintenance costs of these. So I recommend looking at F360... If your a hobbyist or student its free even better for you... Peter
