I built My CNC From David Steels Plans Now I need Feedrate help please

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this thread so sorry to the mod. if it is not...

I Made My CNC From David Steels Plans and now I need some help with the feed rate.

I upped the size of my router to a 2-1/4 HP PORTER CABLE 892 ROUTER. After hours of searching I now know the chipload formula and other chipload details, but I still don't understand how it applies to my CNC.

What I am wanting to know the most is how to figure the depth of each pass and the feed rate relative to my HP and RPM.

As I said before I have a veritable speed (10,000 23,000 RPM) 2-1/4 HP Porter Cable Router.

I'm am looking to do wood, plastic, HDU and possibly Aluminum.

I have done many little projects and signs with this table already, I keep breaking bits and burning them up at times.

Also the top IPM I can get out of this table is only 35 IPM.

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

Bit's usually break from getting too hot and dull. The problem is that the machine is too slow. A lot of 1/4" woodworking bits (spiral) recommend a chip load of around .005. A 2 flute tool at 10,000 rpm will require 100 ipm. A 1/4" spiral bit is easily capable of cutting 300ipm or more.

At 35ipm, your best bet would be to use 1 flute bits, which work better at slower speeds. As for depth of cut, quality will suffer as you cut deeper. Use the tool diameter for depth of cut, but you can go deeper, or shallower, depending on the quality of cut and your machines abilities.

I would say speed of machine< material and depth. you would need more hp to cut 100 ips on say maple at say 1/4" deep cuts . My little ports cable trimmer will bog down some cutting cedar at 1/4" deep cut, It will cut it but the first cut it slows down a bit, after that its ok. Graham

The only time HP comes into play is if you don't have enough. It it starts to slow down, then you'll need to lower your feed rate.
