SL20 reboot during spindle accel/decel, no alarm generated?

    MY 2000 SL20
    VER 04.27N
    MOCON#1 10.02
    (main board marked 3092K, REV C,JAN 2011)

We lost our data during a battery change on our SL20.

We were able to recover most of it from a backup we did before the change. Called HAAS and got the unlock codes for our "upgrades", checked our axis movement with an indicator, and ran our warm-up program for the spindle and live tooling.

We ran a part program in graphics mode and everything was good. Went to test the program "cutting air" and the machine rebooted under spindle decel on a canned cycle with G96.

After pulling my hair out for a day, I found that I could cause the same fault by commanding any rapid spindle speed change, whether it's within a program or by rapidly turning the jog handle while under spindle override.

The machine just reboots itself, with no error codes other than spindle turning while not expected, I'm guessing this is due to the spindle still coasting down when the machine is booting up.

We don't have the original manual for the machine with the printout of the settings and parameters when it was first assembled, nor do we have the original backup disk. Just the full machine backup from last week.

I took a video of the screen during a reboot under accel. It happens at the 0:30 mark, though strangely, this time it didn't happen the fist two times the spindle accelerated.

I also took a vid of the electrical cabinet during a decel. I pulled the cover off the boards and reconnected the grounds during the test so I could see the leds.

You can see the boards lose power during the reset at 1:15 on decel.

DC Buss is a steady 340v on the display, I'll check it at the vector drive tomorrow.

I was able to get the machine to run without rebooting by changing:

PARAM 196 ACCEL LIMIT LOAD from 195 to 100

Which limits the spindle acceleration to 100% (+/- 4%)

But I feel that's covering a deeper issue.

I'm thinking it might be an improper spindle parameter in the backup.

The machine ran fine for 8 years beforehand (other than frying the Vector Drive and Spindle Servo Amp in 2017).

Has anyone else experienced this, or have any input on what to check next? I'd rather not run the machine with this bandaid and risk doing damage.

    The spindle parameters are currently:

    SPINDLE STEPS/REV 79: 8000
MAX SPINDLE DELAY TIME 80: 25000
    SPINDLE REV TIME. 118: 30

Re: SL20 reboot during spindle accel/decel, no alarm generated?

    Hi John
We have an SL-20 with this same problem that started when the local Haas guys put in a battery back-up and lost all the parameters. They have been trying to figure this out since Jan 2023 and have had no luck. Have you gotten yours figured out and back up and running? if so would you mind sharing what you had to do to get it running?

    Thanks

    -Chris

Re: SL20 reboot during spindle accel/decel, no alarm generated?

Have you put a voltmeter on the 5V DC rail going into the board triple-stack and watched that value on a voltmeter when it does this? And then each of the 12V and -12V? It sure looks to me like the whole machine is running out of current during the high load of spinning up. If the incoming power sags enough, so too will the DC coming from the power supply. If the DC voltage dips enough, the computer portion of the machine will shut down.

The reason this could be coincidentally related to your battery replacement: you might have an aging circuit breaker on the machine or even on your electrical panel. They did a full shut off of the incoming power, which now cycled the aged contacts and it's suddenly not the same when they turned it back on.

Hello, the last time I saw this problem it was due to a short circuit in the spindle motor coils, it is unlikely to happen but it doesn't hurt to check.

I have loaded my SL20 with the parameters that come from the factory configured when the machine is reset after changing the battery, simply write the model, the machine works very well

We finally figured out what caused this same problem on or SL-20. It was a problem with the Mocon boards. Changed them and no more rebooting problems.
