I am rolling around the idea of splitting the new departure nut that takes up the preload on the axes as its really a pain to get it just right as when the nuts are tightened together they tend to move one another slightly and clearance in the threads etc.

I am going to split one side of one of them and cross drill and tap it for a 6-32 or so screw so that it can be snugged-up and tightened without changing the preload?? Does this make any sence?

I did split the PDB nut and used the same procedure to keep it from loosening up periodically, this seems to have solved that problem as it hasnt loosened in over a year now.

In my opinion clamping is much more secure than a setscrew and more precise than two nut tightened together.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or am I out in left field?
