Chances of converting a 3 Phase robot to single phase.

    Hi All,

I foolishly and happily purchased an old Panasonic welding robot at auction. It's a Panasonic VR2 series YA-1N with a GII controller.

I will probably borrow a 3 phase generator to test it and then hoping I can convert it to single phase.

I'm thinking long term, that I may be able to retrofit a new controller but re-use the servo amps. -They are single phase 200VAC in. I'm on Single phase 240V.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? -Do I just try to justify hooking up 3 phase to our house to my wife?

    Hi,
there are devices like PhasePerfect that convert single phase into three phase, but depending on the power requirement are expensive.

On the device or driver there should be a manufacturers name plate which should specify the power level. That will determine the size of the phase converter.

All single phase to three phase converters demand very high current from the single phase supply. If the robot is much beyond 4kW then that would require a
high current single phase circuit, say 30A or so, well beyond the circuits in most households. You might therefore have to get a specialist circuit installed just to run the phase converter.

Thanks, looks like a phase converter is not the way to go in that case (I believe it's 6Kw but including the welder). I'll look more at a mega project to convert it to single phase or get 3 phase hooked up.

Connecting 3 phase power to L1, L2, L3 per the diagram would be a dead short, L1 and L3 are shown as being connected together. I wonder if it was connected to single phase 230V using L1 and L2 ?

I would look for more documentation, it might run on single phase as it is.

It looks like you only have one part that is asking for 3Ph the rest is single phase, so you may not need 3Ph at all, need the specs of the power supply the 3Ph is connected too

It is wired incorrect as per diagram
