    Belt Drive vs. Leadscrew

After having very good success with my first home-brew router I've decided to build a larger one. To large I think to use leadscrews for the X & Z, so I'd like to try belt drive.

Can anyone give any quick tips to get me started - i.e. parts sources, pics of what you have done with belts, etc? I'm starting from scratch here - just like I did when I made the first machine.

    Thanks

have you considered gear rack(for x)? How long of Z are you thinking of that you think that screws wont be good for it?

Hi there, I think solsylva has plans for an all belt driven router. maybe check that out. All I know is I would not hook the belt up direct to the motor. I think he uses gears to drive the belt. Good luck. graham

    Rack

    Sir,

Here is a good source of rack: www.stdsteel.com/gear.htm
The cost for 1/2 x 1/2 x 72" rack is about $24 each in qty = 2. Get 20 DP, 20 degree pressure angle rack. Pinions can be had from either Boston Gear or Martin Gear snd Sprocket. Prices are reasonable.

Jerry wanted some ideas; I have attached pix of my machine, a test bed for my efforts at a CNC controller.

    Regards,
    Jack C.
