tap depth varies in 316SST - what T/C holder is best?

I'm tapping (and thread milling) in 316 SST. But, the holes that are tapped do vary in depth as the material "pushback force" and the tap "grab point" varies. While our machine is older and needs tension/compression holders, I think there are newer T/C holders on the market that address the varying tap depth issue.

Can anybody steer me to a brand they like? Hopefully not too expensive. Thanks!!

A pullout tap holder should not vary in depth, the depth is determined by the feedrate, stroke and number of spindle revolutions.

Are you tapping from a live toolholder?
If so, I have had driven tools motors stalling at low speed due to lack of torque. We had to drill the hole to maximum allowable and plunge in at a higher feedrate.

I'm not familiar with the term "pullout" tap holder. If you mean the collets that have float in just one direction (out) then I guess we could try that. But if you don't feed it at the pitch rate per rev, how do you calculate the depth it will go to? I'm thinking you will feed it less than pitch per rev to let the tap pull itself out but as you said, it's a calculation.

The best tap holder I have seen is a Synchro Tap Holder. The Synchro Tap Holder will give you .020" of tension and .020" in compression to compensate for pitch differences between the machine and tap. These holders use an ER Collet with a Square Drive to give better runout than a Standard T/C Holder. This should solve your issue of tap depth running 316 Stainless.

I really like the Pioneer 1" Straight Shank Synchro Holders, they are less expensive than a CAT40/CAT50 Synchro Holder and give you the versatility to run it in a Lathe or Mill (with a 1" End Mill Holder). These Synchro Holders are also less than a T/C Holder. They offer them for ER20 or ER32 collets (if you already use these collets then a standard collet would work for taps 3/8 and under to keep your costs down but anything above 3/8 taps we would recommend a ER Tap Collet with a square drive to make sure the tap does not spin). Here are the ones we recommend:

Any Synchro or T/C Holder should solve your issue though!

Mike, Love ya man. Thanks for replying, I'll be calling. Just couldn't get my head around paying 700 plus per copy to "the other guys".
