    AvidCNC Surface Finish Quality

    Hi all,

I am seeing a lot of surface quality issues on my AvidCNC machine. Using a .5 ball end mill with a .025 step over at 170ipm. I will attach a picture as an example.

We have the AvidCNC linear rails and the AvidCNC Ballscrew Z axis. Everything seems to be pretty tight.

    This cut is in Ebony.

    Thanks,

    Mick

With a ball nose you have to do more passes closer together or you vary angle in repeated passes. The stepover as you have defined it is 0.637mm which is 3 times larger than most FFF 3D printers!

So you have a choice, you can spend the time at the current stepover but varying angle and offset until it is near enough or setting your stepover to something like 0.008 inches (0.2032mm) and doing fewer passes.

Either way it's a long, long time.
