Solid Edge already few years. Was cheaper than Solidworks but is it worse ?

for 2D work I MUCH prefer Quickcad ( by Autocad ) for generating quick 2d .DXF files for generating 2.5D programs absolutely nothing is faster ( I can have the drawing done, posted code and be setting offsets before solidworks boots ) no need to draw pretty pictures when what I want is $$$ off my machines

Worked with Catia, Inventor and Solidworks on school,
in my opinion Solidwork is the fastest and most easy to learn.

Jpeg designed in 2 days (complete machine) and renderd in Photoview on a laptop with 1.6 Ghz in 4 minute and 31 sec.

I'm using Rhino running in an XP virtual environment under Linux. Using rdesktop, the XP vm is available anywhere on my network. The virtualization software is VirtualBox by Sun Micro. It works well, acceptable graphics performance. For 2D, qcad. Kicad for schematics.

I have been pretty much just an AutoCad guy, But just recently the company i work for started sending six of us to the local community college for Solid Edge training. So far I am loving it more and more.

Hi Guys,
I trained to an advanced level in AutoCad and thought it was pretty good until I found Solid edge ( solid works) . Far less keys strokes in Solid Edge to achieve the same results. I never use AutoCad anymore.

I'm curious about running Mastercam, and WhatEverCAD under Linux, just because I'm growing to hate windows so. I understand that MCam will run under VMware on a Mac, and even faster than on a PC too...but would like to build a new Linux box and wean off of Windows.

Guys on the upper end at work use ProE...steep, steep learning curve, but they like it, and second on the list is Solidworks. Alibre comes in around 3rd or 4th with AutoCad. Me, I liked SolidEdge ver.13 when I was using CAD. Now, at the bottom of the food chain, Mastercam is pretty much all I run.

So far, X4 is looking pretty powerful and I think I'm liking it.

I'm a refugee from Silicon Valley.

For the most part I use Gentoo Linux which isn't exactly newbie friendly but is highly configurable. I'd grab an Ubuntu release to get started with linux. Very, very easy to use. You could grab the EMC distro which is built on Ubuntu and have a machine controller available as well. http://linuxcnc.org

I haven't tried solidworks yet as it's a bit pricey for my budget. Rhino is very intuitive.

Virtualbox allows the VM to utilize the host's graphics accelerator. I haven't ran any graphics benchmarks but the performance is tolerable. Keep in mind you'll still be running the cad application under a windows VM.

Been trained with solid works, mastercam, workNC,Unigraphics,Bobcad, Bridgeport software, tried Rhino (nice).

Did many 3D designs in BobCAD and imported them right into Unigraphics no problem.
