for 2d i have autocad and dolphin. If i plan to machine something i always use dolphin. for 3d i have the simple version of alibre and don't really like it. Maybe the best version would be nice. Don't like autocad for 3d. I really want to get ahold of a copy of solidworks... just need a student version or something

I like to use Solidworks, but I use Solidedge at work. I also have AutoCAD and I have been using it since 1987. I prefer Solidworks and have been using it since 1997. I have also used Pro-E, Mechanical Desktop, Microcadam and Helix Design.

Hello, we make cutting tools like drills, end mills, ball end mills and reameres, other special profile tools customized. Our core range is diameter 0.030 to 3.0mm and also have capability of cutting diameters for diameter 0.020 to 20.00mm. Recently we made drills with aspect ratio of 100 in dia 0.15 mm means diameter 0.15 mm with flute length 15mm.

We use 2d type autocad for our manufacturing drawing and 3d modeling by using machine supplier software.

So, there are many different CAD solutions. There is also a broad price range associated with all these different types.
What would be interesting would be the list of software mentioned along with the pricing.
I got into Turbocad for under $100, but with upgrades to 17.2 Platinum, I am in at about $1500 currently. I upgrade every third version.
Since I am a very small business, I only design parts for myself and the business. No way I could justify thousands of dollars for a some of this software. Not about to shoulder a parrot and go the Arrrrr route either.

From that aspect, the data might be skewed some as well. What software have you personally bought for yourself or your own business? That means legally.
I would love to have Solid Works. I have discussed that possibility with them a couple times already. They don't offer much help to the little guys.
Dolphin on the other hand, made it possible with an offer for me to be able to buy them for Turn. It came with their CAD as well, but I don't use it.

I really like ViaCAD 3D V8. Have been an AutoCAD user for years. But for 3D work I find ViaCAD very user friendly. Take a look at their web site to see all the 3D handling, is really very nice. With a coupon I found on the web, My final cost as only $60 for the full package, which included a DVD.

Surprised to see Rhino so low, It seems to be quite popular here in NZ (although i do come from a heavy design background)
