controller for small cnc mill + motor swap (emco f1)

i own an emco f1 and i want to change the controller and maybe the motors as well. i'm wondering if anyone has experience with controllers that might fit well for this small 3 axis mill. also should i stay with the stock stepper motors, upgrade them or go for servo motors? will it be worth the trouble?

The magazine "Digital Machinist" (or possibly the sister magazine "Home Shop Machinist") had a series on refitting the F1. Check that out for some good info. Info on back issue purchase can be found at
