it seems odd that the cert of auth would have a short set of numbers for the install. there should be 5 groups of 5 digits each, (including letter/number combinations).
so your cert of auth only has 4 groups of 5? contact the place you bought it from, or microsoft.
Are the numerals going in? Maybe you used the keypad with numlock off?
First you get good, then you get fast. Then grouchiness sets in.

It reads like this .
Jim,
That looks more like a number for Microsoft Office97

Thank you for all of the help.I bought XP that solved the problem.
Call MS they will give you the installation code, ask me how I know...
that depends on where/how you got the software. if you got it legaly, you should have no problems; contact the company you got it from. if you bought it second hand, you may be in violation of a license agreement
i'll bite.. how do you know?
I wonder how rich Gates would be if everyone that uses Windows legally purchased it?

I bought a new OEM window OS and threw out the wrapper that had the codes, so I called MS and after answering questions they gave me the reg codes, the software must be legal as mine was.
Jim Can I ask why you are using Win98 in the first place?
With Win2000 or XP you are Much better off .

Can't boot to DOS to run controllers with XP as the OS.
Multiboot the OS's. Put a small (1gb) c: partition first, install DOS. Install XP/win2k to a second d: partition, NT install routine sets up the boot files for XP/win2k on first C: partition and boot.ini gives you the ability to chose which system to boot on system start..
Use MACH2 - it runs UNDER (behind?) Windows.

Experience is the BEST Teacher. Is that why it usually arrives in a shower of sparks, flash of light, loud bang, a cloud of smoke, AND -- a BILL to pay? You usually get it -- just after you need it.
I gave up on Winows 98 ,and just bought Windows XP.It works great!
at least 20 billion dollars richer, but who's counting

measure twice, cut once - a good rule for everything
Technically, you have to have the actual certificate of authenticity for any software to be legal... you lose that and you can't prove you own didly. Of course there are always exceptions to the rules.
I've seen differing versions of windows 98 such as an upgrade or SE version have differnet sized keys. It sounds to me as if you have a mismatched CD and Key combo.
Oh and BTW... if that is a really product key you posted you should remove it.
It was the wrong Product Key but I erased it anyway just to be safe. The correct set of numbers was on my owners manual.
Thanks for all the help!
There is a web site that has a freeware program you can download to find any Microsoft product key that you have installed on your computer. This is handy if you need to re-install software such as Win95 through XP or any Office products because you somehow lost your original product key or threw away your package. Simply install and run, it will show you any product key installed on your computer.

The program is called Key Finder.
Note this is for leagal use only to find your original product key in case you lost it. You should never throw any produck keys or original packaging in the trash.
