I have seen a 2" Double sided tape used by a competitor sign shop and have set out to find out what they are using as their Hold down tape when using the cnc router. I almost resorted to doing some late night Dumpster Diving to find a throw away roll to get a name atleast as to what it is. All I know is what I seen on some stuff they cut for me before.

what I have learned that the 2 sided Carpenters tape is not the right stuff. What we need to find is what is called Crepe paper not Cloth Or Film or Tissue paper. the cloth carpet tape from local hardware stores is a woven fiber and I can already tell without my cnc here that this stuff will move. it has good tensil strenght but has shear movement.

I've read about using Scapa 174, Tesa 4970, Shur-tape DF-63 and others. I found that site a memnber found I think it is http://www.actioncnc.com/w123.htm
This site has a tape available for $24 for the 2" roll I want but I am going to find the first distributor of this tape. I found that are the same for $9 ea.

and once they get here I will discover what is the right one. I will post my findings here. Like I said it has to be a double sided Crepe paper style tape
or it will be too thick and will have shear (side to side) movement. If any one has experience with this type of hold down with a tape that works good please post links here.

some are asking why do you need tape to hold stuff down?

Simply in some applications it is a great holding source. small cut through lettering, holding multiple thin materials stacked to cut through at once and others. I can show some of the ways and it may open eyes to alternative holdings even for those eith Vacume table.

the last link is the one I think it is going to be the winner it is the one that says it is a Crepe Paper tape and I think that is what is needed.

When it said golf club grips, I thought it looked familiar. It's just a double sided version of regular tan masking tape. http://www.golfsmith.com/products/902B

I've never tried it for holding parts, but I guess it should work. Especially if you'll be cutting through it. I've used the cloth carpet tape lots of times with no problems at all. But don't cut through it, as it'll wrap onto the bit. I'll have to try the other stuff, as I always have a roll or two in the garage for regripping my golf clubs.

Ok here's what I have learned about the wonderful world of tape.

the link below is for the tape I have ordered and will be ordering a case at a time. This is the exact same tape that a guy I think at cncsupply.com was calling the WOW tape for $25 a roll. this is $8-$6 depending on the case quantity.

this tape is great to hold almost anything down to the table or multiple layers of thin materials together.

the term CREPE paper is the backing that it is made on. you can use this as a hold down tape and cut right through it no problem.

the other tapes on the link above and the CARPET tape that we find at Hardware stores is not so good. You can not cut through that stuff. there are fibers or threads in those tapes that like Gerry said will wrap into the bit.

so use the link below and buy some tape make sure it is CREPE PAPER tape 2" this stuff is just like the ragular masking tape we all use No fibers or Threads in it and it removes clean. happy holdings..

that looks good but does it come in 2" ? 1/2" isn't much surface area.
