    Should I shim those bearings?

    Hi,
I'm converting my BF20L mill to CNC. In the axes ball screw end support I used 2 deep groove ball bearings. In the Y axis there was some play so I shimmed the bearings using 0.1mm. much better but there is still some play. Is this amount of a play acceptable or do I need to add another shim?

Why have you not use angular contact?.
Do it once, do it right.

You shouldn't need to shim anything if you have the ballscrew, bearings, nut set up right.
How have you put the bearings in?. Do you have a stopper ridge central inside the mount and then a bearing each side?.
This will allow the bearings to press back to back as the nut is tightened thus eliminating play.

If it is set up like this above and the nut is correct, then that's your backlash I'm afraid.

Buy some AC bearing they are about $7 each. You might need more shims. Set them tight so you can not feel any play in the bearings and it will only spin 2 turns or so by hand if you remove the bearing mount in hand..

. You might have some play in the ball nut but you need the bearing tight first.
