    Rigid tapping Left hand

    Hi everyone I ran into a problem rigid tapping left hand , I am use to the usual G84 command for right hand tapping but when I try to use M4 /G84 the machine just sits in front of the part and will not do anything , I talked to a program tech were we purchases the machine and he got back to me and said that this could possibly be a Fanuc option , when he told me this I gave him a silence for a minute over the phone and said to him you have to be kidding me! I have tried using the good old G32 I got an Illegal code alarm I tried G74 got an invalid G code alarm I tried the M72/G84 combo with no luck. this is a 21i controller. And I fear this is possibly a machine builder problem. which has me up against a wall the machine is out of warranty , ha ha sucks to be me! Is left hand rigid tapping really an option? or am I getting hood winked any help I would be grateful.

    Here is the code breakdown for a citizen with 30i. Try D-1.

    G84 Z.5 F.03125 D1 R.03 S500 B2.

    Z.5 =Z position of the bottom of the hole

    D1 =spindle S1 or -1 for left hand taps(S2 for sub)

    F.03125 =Feed in IPR

    R.03 =Rapid from current Z position the R amount incrementally.
    If starting at Z-.05 and R=.03 then the Z axis rapidly
    positions to "Z-.02"
    the same position "Z-.02". If you use "R-.03" it is the same
    as "R.03". Leave R out to start from current Z position.

    S500=RPM

    I just had the same problem this week on a machine, contacted the machine tool builder and they sent me a new ladder diagram to upload. Now it works fine. Seems they didn't write the M4 for rigid tapping into the original ladder.

    Seams like the company that we bough the machine from will not let us have the ladder info I may have to get a hold of Fanuc and see if it is true that the counter tapping(Left hand rigid tapping) is an option that we have to buy, which I think is a bunch of B.S.

    Have a look at parameter 5200 bit 0. It must be set to 0 in order to use G74 for left hand rigid tapping (and you must use M29 prior to G74). If it is set to 1, G74 is not available and you don't need to command M29 prior to G84 for right hand rigid tapping.

    Since you get invalid G code on G74, I suspect 5200#0 is set to 1.

    regards, Oz

    Yes , Oz you are right #5200 bit 0 was set to 1 I changed it and still have no luck tapping left hand , don't know what to do but call Fanuc to resolve this problem but I have a feeling that they will reply that I need to talk to the machine builder that we purchased the machine from , and I still can't believe that rigid left hand tapping could be an optional purchase.

    According to the documentation I have, G74 is an option that has to be purchased.
