    8x12

    hello!

looking at a lathe for a while but haven't needed it. Finally, for converting my x3 i will be grinding down the ballscrews myself so finally have a excuse to pick one up.

I had a micromark 7x14 a while back and killed it, so im a bit weary to go back to the 7x12 or 7x10... id like to get it from harborfreight to avoid shipping prices, however ebay sells cummins for around 415$+65$ to ship or so.

So the lathemaster 8x14" is perfect, but with shipping makes it 912$. What do you guys think of the harborfreight 8x12?

what are the limitations of the 8x12? can it spin/thread in forwards and reverse? left hand threading? weak motor or strong enough? Can its toolpost fit something like http://www.littlemachineshop.com/pro...2001&category= on it?

also, how big is the motor on the 7x10?

    regards

Define killed? Do you still have it? All replacement parts are available from Little Machine shop. It might be way cheaper to repair the lathe you have.

o hey there! looks like you got all sections of the forum covered:rainfro:

killed as in fried the mosfets on the controller... i returned it as i was expecting way to much from it. was going to get a x2 and this lathe but just got the x3 and a rotary table instead...

well i im'd customer service and they said they could not order a part to a store if it was in stock. i think it was a robot talking to me, i called my local store and got a really friendly person saying if i ordered it today, i would pay upfront then i would get the lathe by the end of the week. no shipping obviously and they would match the online price:rainfro:

If you read the 8x reviews already posted you would see that the 8x12/ 14 are the same machine. The difference is in a few accessories and the customer support. I have had an HF 8x12 version and have ordered goodies from lathemaster for it. They work as listed.
I bought my 8x12 for mid $400 last spring very good lather for the money! http://annisquamgranite.com/lathecomparo.htm

yeah... man if i could snag it for 430$ like they were(i think) i would do it 2maro. 530$ doesn't seem bad for the lathe it seems to be. I will most likely pick up a warrenty as i have had lots of dodgey parts from HF, unless you guys advise against it.

here is some tooling i am thinking of, anyone want to correct please?(just to start out)

hmm im excited. What are some alternatives to those insert tooling that people like? can you resharpen those carbide inserts? how long do they last?

I'm going to throw this out there: If you are willing to spend as much as $928, You might want to consider the $995 Grizzly 10 x 22. This is the non-CNCd Sieg C6. I think it is the BEST bang for the lathe buck.

It comes with about $300 worth of accessories for free, can take up to an eight inch chuck, and is a size and power that would serve you well for a good long time.

    http://grizzly.com/products/10-x-22-...al-Lathe/G0602

I'm sure the price for this is going to rise.

i looked at that a long time ago... call it 1.1k. Ill try to work out somethign with my dad, i don't have that much cash atm and not sure if i have the space(bet i can move disc sander/drill press but will have to measure).

whats in the toolbox? it doesn't come with a qctp nor a tool post grinder... but ill play around with the idea:rainfro:

No lathe comes with a tool post grinder or QCTP. The 8 x 12 or 14 is just a mini-lathe. It's only slightly larger than the one you already killed.

I doubt you would be able to kill the 10 x 22 though.

Here's the manual which shows a pic of the toolbox. (Which just holds the wrenches and some of the accessories:

I think i'm going with the HF 8x12 for my 1st one , how do i obtain a coupon ? i get the e-mail sale item coupons , but i don't see anything that would get me a cheaper lathe , is it the one they send in the mail on the flier for ?? % off a single item ? i have a HF nearby so seems to be my best option , i can have it shipped there and pick it up and start making some blue chips ! LOL , well maybe some stringy chips.

Yep! About every 4 months you get a coupon in the sale flyer. Once in awhile there is the same coupon in the sale emails too.

so tempted... but realize that won't be a money-making investment it seems. I wont be using a lathe 1/3 as much as the mill, so why get a more expensive lathe then mill? the 8x14 fits the bill perfect and seems like a very nice machine. i killed the 7x14" by stupid noob reasons... and turning difficult metals like copper. will mostly be spinning plastic and aluminum, and copper too but most of the coper work will be pretty easy stuff.

I was planning on buying lathe+ 100$ +- in tooling. once i find i need more stuff get the rest of the tooling... followed by the qctp and when i start my cnc conversion get the grinder.

Do you think i should wait for it to go on sale or do i risk having the price raise back up to 600$? id love a 20% off coupon... that would be awsome

I'm going to have to call BS on that statement... The 8x12 is actually three times the weight of the 7x and much larger size wise! It is a small lathe but very well built for the price. I have recomened this lathe stongly and no one has regreted it so far. Just go in to your puchase with your eyes open and choose wisely for what you need a lathe to do. There will always be more expensive and larger machines if thats what you need. I was able to buy my X3 and my 8x12 for about $1200 total and have been able to have a nice pair of machines with out breaking the budget

wow your a f*g... 1200$? how much did you pay for the x3!?!?!?

the 8x12 should be more then enough for what i want.

cr- if i wasn't going to cnc my mill i would get the 10x22... but once i cnc it i plan to have the mill doing most of the work that i would do on the lathe. still will use it for threading and finishing and boring.

did some measurements. gotta clear some space if i want the lathe. spending about 300$ on various stuff atm so kinda just shot my budget for the lathe. hoping to have the cash by mid july...

    regards

Well yes, it Does weigh 254 pounds. I'll give you that. But it also still has the mini lathe MT3 spindle size, An 8 inch swing IS only slightly larger than a 7 inch swing--And Harbor Freight actually CALLS it a mini lathe.

    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=44859

So, no BS! I call it a mini lathe, and stand by what I said. (And I said NOTHING about weight.)

I got the x3 in december with a 15% coupon I think it was 849 so both together would be arround 1300 not 1200
Most people who talk down about the 8x12 have never turned one on. Looking at pictures in the HF website doesnt count as experience. It wont do it all, but for the price I'm very happy after more than a year.
