Chip load is the linear amount each flute moves as it passes thru the material. (How much material is removed by each flute). It is used in a formula to determine optimum speeds/feeds for a given tool in given material.
PHP Code:
ChipLoad x RPM x NumberOfFlutes = InchesPerMinute of travel
or
PHP Code:
InchesPerMinute x RPM x NumberOfFlutes = ChipLoad
It will vary from operation to operation, from tool to tool, from material to material, etc etc. Many tool manufacturers have a suggested recommendation. HAAS' newer machines have a calculated display on the controller.
Here's some other formulae:
PHP Code:
Tapping Feed: RPM / TPI = Feed (IPM)
Thread Pitch: 1 / TPI = Pitch
RPM x DIA / 3.82 = SFPM
SFM x DIA x 3.82 = RPM
