Converting a cheap printer to a laser engraver for wood

I've got an old Epson R200 printer that can do CD lables that has clogged heads.

So I was thinking about trying to replace the print head with a laser/laser
array and using it to do engraving on wood.

The main ideas here are to use the cheap existing mechanics
    and find less expensive lasers.

The main problems I see are configuring the laser/array and the software.

A search of the archives turned up some info on using printer carriages/
steppers but I didn't see anything like this.

Anyone know if someone's done something like this?

    Thanks
