Converting a Manual Surface Grinder to a CNC

Is it possible to converting a manual traversing surface grinder over to a CNC driven. It seems that most use surface grinders use hydraulics instead of motors? Whats the reason for this? Thanks.

Hydraulics are used on the X-axis only. The Z and the Y still use leadscrews.

Is your manual grinder equipped with a leadscrew on the X or a braided cable? Mine is the latter.

Manual table feed converted to automatic

    Hello Left 4 Dead

I worked for Harig Products and know I am working out of my home doing technical support for the thousands of Harig customers through out the USA.
Harig used hydraulics on there x axis for two reasond cost and reliability. On our EZ Surf CNC grinders we also use a hydraulic cylinder with a textron valve and a encoder on the axis so you can program your movements to
.00001. The cost to convert wouldnt be cost effective. You might try looking for a good used Grinder, if you have any questions on what to buy or where to look may give me a call or e mail me you phone number I would be more than happy to help you. Looking forward to talking with you.
