This conversion was done a Haas VF3 that had a failed CRT

Removed old CRT.

*** NOTE - DANGER - Warning Will Robinson !!!!!!!!
MAKE SURE YOU DISCHARGE THE FLYBACK AND CAPS ON THE CRT BEFORE DISASSEMBLY.
GOOGLE CRT HIGH VOLTAGE TO SEE HOW TO DO THIS.
*** Take this warning seriously less you wet your pants and learn what a defibulator feels like.

Be careful to not break the CRT iteself.
EVERYTHING can be unscrewed and the whole CRT assembly can be seperated from the frame.

Removed CRT and all CRT electronics from CAD plated CRT Frame.
We saved the CRT and electronics in case we needed them.

LCD has a normal screen on it and is not protected from the elements.
We made our own screen protector.
Made a sacraficial lens/screen protector from 0.093" acrylic.
Cut screen protector on laser.
Put 0.093" holes in screen protector to allow a pencile to pass through so that the operator could press the monitor buttons on the face of the monitor.
Burned these through with the CO2 laser.

Made a backing plate out of the old monitor bracket.

Made some aluminum stand offs.
Threaded both ends of stand offs.

Placed screen protector against panel face.
Used stand offs to screw screen protector to panel face.

Put monitor against screen protector.
Shimmed the face of the monitor to keep screen protector from pressing function buttons on LCD.

Put backing plate on outside of monitor and sandwitched everything together.

Plugged in 12v power supply to 110VAC power cord in cabinet
Plugged in 9 pin DIN connector and extension cable to 9 pin DIN video supply.

Powered on monitor and machine.

Set monitor using auto adjustments

Put Cover back on machine

Make parts.

Funny how all the monitors for cheap disappeared after this thread started going way back when. cheapest I've found em for now is 375-450.00 but alot of people want like 600-1200 for em. lol can buy a 17" for like less than a hundred too.

I don't remember what it cost but $250 sounds right?

It was plug and play only thing was i used Velcro to attach it in the back but u can make your own brackets if you wanted

Just replaced the monitor in my 2000 TM-1 with one I found on ebay. There aren't anymore listed at the moment but it came from these guys:

LT12B-TTL, Miracle 12" LCD Monitor, 9-Pin TTL Supports MDA (Monochrome Mono) / CGA/ EGA Systems

The cost was about $350 with shipping, which is honestly about the best deal out there for a nearly drop in replacement. You can possibly do it a bit cheaper with an MDA to VGA signal converters for about $200 and then use a regular VGA LCD, but then it's not that easy to find 12" 4:3 aspect ratio LCDs anymore. So it's worth just getting the all in one solution.

There are other LCDs out there that will work if you search around. The important thing is that it supports the MDA graphics mode and has a 9pin connector. The 12" size is a perfect fit for my TM-1.

I made up some simple brackets for mounting and have attached a STEP model to this post, in case anyone can use them in the future.

Haas replacement was about $800 or $900. Monitor was $449. Like you said pretty much a drop in replacement had a fab a couple of brackets out of some old lexan I had laying around.
