Does anyone have any ideas on how to finish a photo engraved into wood?
Should I not stain the piece at all, stain the piece before I engrave...airbrush stain on...?
Thanks

I tend to feel that it depends on the grain and type of wood, maybe if you have a few odd bits, you could experiment a bit first to see what looks best......
I tend to think that staining is not a good idea after cutting, I would stain first then cut then use a clear varnish to seal or just wax polish.....
You do need a difference to be able to see a difference.....all stained the same may make your masterpiece difficult to see.
I have made a few things in laminate plastic, brown inside beige outside (Formica 6mm thick) and the contrast between the inside and the out was fantastic.....now trying to learn to do it again on my own, with a nearly fisnished home built CNC....
Luckily, I know the stores guy at the German main depot for Formica, he will become my Son-in-law next year!! I get cutoffs for free.....(just showing off a bit, sorry!:cheers its quite expensive if you have to buy it!!
Look at the reply I posted on your other thread on the same subject.

I did some of those and finished them just with wax. My pictures was not only engraved though, I made a small relief (3mm). You can see what I mean here : http://www.gg70.com/engaltro.htm
I would like to build a clock like your Model 1 clock for my son for Christmas next year (2009).
I am assuming that you have the g-code files for the various gears and assemblies, since they appear to be routed out.
Would you consider allowing me to have, or purchase the g-code files to make my Son a clock? It would be something that he can cherish the remainder of his life and pass on to one of his sons.

Hey guys mind if I butt in? Look at the stuff in my pictures I done a few years ago. I think I was one of the first to engrave a photo! Using a 1541 3 flute 60 degree router bit form routerbits.com, carve against the grain of the wood, Maple with little grain works best, engrave the photo, Stain I had to experiment with different stain colors to achieve desired results, Dark works best, Lightly sand with 220, Then stain, Wait a few minutes then sand again until the results are to your liking. Remember the key to staining is the darker areas are engraved deeper while the lighter areas are on the surface.
Aksess,
I have seen your work, and it is amazing. I have been admiring it for about four years or so.

Thank you.
I think I have a pdf with dxf files on building a clock. I will post them if I can find them.
I moved on from a cnc router to a cnc mill, Now I have a cnc plasma table "Plasmacam"
I have been thinking of getting another router and get rid of the mill
