Tool Life Management on Okuma Captain Lathe?

I saw a few tool life management screens on our Okuma Captain L370BBMW. Far as I can tell they work based on tool usage. Does anyone know if the spindle load can be used instead? Kinda like how Haas does it? With a Haas you can enter the max percentage of spindle load and the machine will alarm if it goes over what is set.

Also the rapid override switch is the same as the feed override switch. Is there anyway to have the switch control only the rapids? I like to take it easy on the rapids on the first few parts, but I don't want to be cutting at 10% of the programmed feed. I end up having to single block and turn the override switch up when it's cutting then back down for the rapid moves. At the speed the lathe moves this is a recipe for a crash if I make a mistake.

    Thanks in advance

    Tool Life Management on Okuma's

Yes, nearly all Okuma's do have tool management

------and torque control---------( tapping torque) for lathes and mills

tool management by "number of times used" or "time in cut" using the screens you have seen ( I would use in a large production run only )

torque control can be of 2 types -

-simple- by selecting 1 of 4 setable ranges and actions ( what to do if range is achieved ie emerg.stop, )
this is found at the end of the parameter pages and, I think, activated by G-code

-advanced- very similar to tool management ( individual settings )

( I am presently on leave, and not able to give you correct codes until I return ) ( post me if still required )

Tool life managment has 4 ways to show a worn tool

    • Number of machined workpieces
    • Cumulative cutting time
    • Cumulative tool wear
    • NG flag in tool gauging

The info is in the Special function manual

the fifth is load monitor. It's not directly a tool life management. It could be used also. Tool tip wear causes rise of spindle (or other monitored axis) load.
