Best Leadscrew for Speed (and Accuracy)?

I'm going to start building a JGRO shortly and have been reading threads here for weeks. One thing I still haven't been able to decide on is which leadscrew makes the most sense.

I've been leaning towards 1/2"-10 ACME 2 start for all 3 axes. This looks like a good compromise between accuracy and speed. If I understand this correctly, a higher start (e.g. 5 start) would be faster, but has the potential to be less accurate? Would there indeed be a downside to going with a faster screw (e.g. 1/2"-10 5 start or 1/2"-8 2 or 4 start)?

Thanks for any advice from those with experience in this!

Even with a full step stepper drive, 5 start will get you .0025 precision. You more than likely will not be able to build the machine to those tolerances, so it shouldn't matter. The only downside is that you made need more powerful motors to turn them.

    Hi Ger,

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently planning on either a hobbycnc kit or a xylotex kit. The biggest motors they sell are 305 oz. in. (hobbycnc) or 425 oz. in. (xylotex). Would either of these drive the 5 start adequately?

    thanks!
