Optical mouse as a 2D-feedback device for "servos" (or steppers)

Using an optical mouse on the table for a router, could that ever work as an absolute positioning device? I suspect not, but I think mice are fairly good at not loosing "steps". Maybe mechanical mice would work, too, but much less durable of course.

It has been discussed about using a mouse as an encoder. Maybe these threads will answer your question.
