Hi guys!
JFettig suggested I join up here and post this little project. I bought a Sherline 5400 with a CNC conversion from www.acumotion.com in 2000. My boss put me in charge of a engraving/stamp works shop untill he decided what to do with it. He decided to close it down and kept some of the equipment for another year. He decided to finally scrap it. In that mess was a Gorton P1-2 Engraver. I asked him if i could take the X/Y table off and he said sure. So I got the table and decided to modify it into a CNC mill using the parts from my Sherline mill.
Here is what I done so far.
It is basically a working manual mill now. I could also hook up the CNC controller and make it a power feed Z axis. It is very stout now. One more brace at the top of the Z axis will make it plenty good for my needs.
Next step is work on the X/Y lead screws and get them worked out and convert the X/Y to CNC. Then I will work out the smaller details.
